Sort of related, Mots D’Heures: Gousses, Rames: The D’Antin Manuscript (Mother Goose’s Rhymes), published in 1967 by Luis d’Antin van Rooten is purportedly a collection of poems written in archaic French with learned glosses. In fact, they are English-language nursery rhymes written homophonically as a nonsensical French text, that is an English-to-French homophonic translation. Moreover, the result is not merely the English nursery rhyme but that nursery rhyme as it would sound if spoken in English by someone with a strong French accent.

When my grandfather died, we found this among his things in his distinctive handwriting. You can use it to find the day of the week for a date in the past or future. Choose the year from the right or left table of numbers. Follow that row along to the column of months in the matching colour - red/black. Use the corresponding numbered calendar along the bottom. January 11th, 1930 was a Saturday. April 16, 2066 is a Friday (and a day I might die if I live as long as my grandfather did). February 22, 2222 will be a Sunday (if we’re still counting days this way). I was born on a Sunday.

Tonight, I finally have the stereo set up to play from the ipod, the computer, the radio or, most exciting to me, one of the 150 or so records my grandparents collected over the course of their lives together. There are hours and hours of music, mostly classical, for me to discover - some of the recordings totally unknown to me, others, favorites I grew up with. Right now I am listening to a superb recording by someone called Jean Duplessis of Chopin’s Nocturnes with the hiss of the needle and the occasional run of rhythmic pops that just make it sound better somehow. I am so happy to have been left such a wonderful gift.
